The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has stepped in
to protect workers at Trussed Timber Investments Limited, enforcing payment of
redundancy packages worth K163,639 to 24 employees after the company abruptly
announced plans to relocate its operations to Eastern Province within three
days.
In a statement by Ministry of Labour and Social Security Principal
Public Relations Officer Mwaka Ndawa said Upon receiving the relocation notice,
employees sought the Ministry’s intervention to secure their exit payouts.
She underscored that the timber processing company was
guided on the redundancy process in line with the Employment Code Act, ensuring
workers’ rights and entitlements were safeguarded.
Ms Ndawa highlighted that as a result, the company was
directed to immediately settle all lawful dues owed to the affected employees.
Payments included In lieu of notice December salaries, Gratuity and Accrued
leave days
“This brought the matter to a yielding and orderly
conclusion, preventing workers from being disadvantaged by the short relocation
notice.” She said.
She concluded by urging employers to engage the Labour
Commissioner’s office in good time when contemplating operational changes, to
ensure lawful processes are followed and workers’ welfare is protected.
