The Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) has announced that
teachers will soon be required to sit for licensure examinations as part of new
reforms under the Teaching Profession Act No. 1 of 2026, which repeals and
replaces the previous Act No. 5 of 2013.
The new law grants TCZ the authority to introduce and
administer licensure exams aimed at strengthening professionalism and improving
standards in the education sector.
TCZ Registrar, Dr. Ebby Mubanga, explained that the exams
will ensure teachers meet required professional standards before being fully
registered and allowed to practice.
“We are preparing the ground for licensure examinations, and
we are also reviewing the renewal period for practising licences, which may
change from three years to one year. The focus is mainly on new entrants into
the profession. This is meant to protect the integrity of the profession and
safeguard learners,” Dr. Mubanga said.
He added that detailed regulations are being developed to
guide the structure, content, and implementation of the exams. Teaching unions
will be involved in reviewing and contributing to the exam content to ensure
fairness and relevance.
