Mopani Copper Mines PLC has unveiled a fleet of over 20
underground man-riding buses to improve employee mobility and safety across its
operations in Kitwe and Mufulira.
The buses, each with a 32-seat capacity, are part of the
47 operational machines and equipment acquired from Normet of Finland.
Mopani Chief Operating Officer, Rajvee Bora, said the
carriers will solve a key underground challenge of long walking distances for
employees, improving both safety and productivity.
“With employees no longer required to walk long distances
underground, the workforce will arrive at work more energised and ready to
perform, ultimately supporting stronger operational output,” Bora stated.
Normet Global CEO, Eduardo Santamaria, reaffirmed the
company’s commitment to delivering products that directly address the needs of
underground mines and the people who work in them.
Nkana South Mine Manager, Evans Chilekwa, urged employees
to take good care of the buses, noting that the equipment will ease operational
challenges, including response times to breakdowns.
Mopani CFO, Sharad Gargiya, emphasized that employee
safety remains a priority, adding that the carriers will enhance how workers
move to their underground workstations. He urged employees to avoid riding
machinery not designed for man-riding.
