President Hakainde Hichilema has called on individuals
seeking public office to put national interest above personal gain, stressing
that selflessness is the foundation of responsible leadership.
Speaking during a church service at Mulungushi International
Conference Centre, the Head of State said prioritising national interest makes
decision-making straightforward and prevents abuse of public resources.
“If you flip things and advance personal interest, making
national interest subservient to it, that is where trouble starts. Even the
abuse of public resources begins there,” President Hichilema said.
He described leadership as service to God’s people, focused on improving lives and creating a better future for the younger generation.
He
cited the return of 2.5 million children to school as a fundamental
achievement, calling education “the best investment and the greatest
equaliser.”
The service was marked by uplifting musical performances,
which the President praised for their inspiration, describing himself as a
lover of gospel music deeply moved by the messages conveyed.
President Hichilema also commended Southern Zambia
Conference president Vanny Munyumbwe for his homily, saying personal
testimonies of hope are vital in overcoming challenges. Reflecting on faith, he
said endurance and belief in God enable people to rise above adversity.
