The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has announced the successful purchase of 1,225,215 metric tonnes of non-genetically modified Grade A white maize from farmers across Zambia, marking a major milestone in the country’s 2025 crop marketing season.
This translates to approximately 24.5 million 50kg bags,
procured through a network of 1,586 satellite depots nationwide. The move is
part of FRA’s ongoing effort to replenish the National Strategic Food Reserves,
ensuring that Zambia remains resilient against future food shortages.
Acting Executive Director Justin Chuunka attributed the
bumper procurement to Competitive crop prices offered by FRA, Effective
agricultural policies and Favourable weather conditions during the growing
season.
“These efforts reflect our ongoing dedication to building
robust food reserves that can safeguard Zambia against future food shortages,”
Chuunka stated.
Farmers have been encouraged to sell surplus maize through
FRA depots while retaining sufficient quantities for household consumption,
reinforcing the principle that national food security begins at the household
level.
The FRA’s performance this season underscores its role in Supporting
local farmers, stabilising maize markets and Strengthening Zambia’s food
security architecture
