In a heartwarming moment that captured the spirit of youth empowerment, Permanent Secretary Zachariah Luhanga of Ministry of Labour and Social Security surprised 26-year-old intern Mubiana Lukela with a full-time government appointment during the International Labour Organisation’s Capacity Building Workshop.
The announcement, made from the podium where attendees expected a routine speech, sparked cheers and applause as Luhanga commended Lukela’s exceptional CV and dedication to labour law.
“Our intern who is seated there has already been appointed by the Government of Zambia,” Luhanga declared, shifting the spotlight to a visibly moved Lukela.
Lukela holds a Master’s in Employment Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution, His passion for labour justice stems from childhood experiences witnessing worker mistreatment.
He described the opportunity as “life-changing” and pledged to contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s labour market.
The Ministry has offered full-time roles to 3 of its 15 interns Luhanga urged other ministries to embrace internship programmes as a tool for national productivity and the initiative aligns with Zambia’s push for skills-based youth engagement and inclusive development
