First Quantum Minerals (FQM) says Zambia must leverage
mining as a key enabler for economic diversification, aligning with this year’s
theme “stronger together: progress through partnerships.”
FQM Country Director Anthony Mukutuma emphasized that while
mining growth is essential, retaining value in-country and diversifying into
other sectors will underpin sustainable development.
“The growth of
the mining industry and a focus on retaining value in-country will be key in
ensuring mining becomes an enabler of a diversified economy. Diversification is
what will underpin sustainable growth.” He noted.
Mr Mukutuma echoed President Hakainde Hichilema’s keynote
address, stressing the importance of partnerships between government,
investors, communities, and local businesses.
He highlighted Zambia’s progress in regulatory stability,
infrastructure development, and responsible investment frameworks.
Mr Mukutuma underscored its commitment to Local content
development, Environmental stewardship and Skills and innovation.
The company pointed to ongoing investments in energy
resilience, transport corridors, and innovation as examples of partnership-led
development.
With increased exploration, expanded production capacity,
and stronger collaboration, FQM said Zambia is entering a new phase of
opportunity.
“The irony is this:
Zambia must grow its mining industry to lower its dependency on mining. The
focus on growing all the other sectors of the economy must remain front and
centre while we head towards the 3 million tonnes per year goal.” Mukutuma
concluded.
