A fatal workplace accident at Mimbula Minerals Limited, a British‑owned mining operation in Chingola, has reignited concerns over employee safety and investor responsibility in Zambia’s mining sector.

Officials confirmed that Process Plant Operator Eddie Nfunda (local employee) died after being struck on the neck by a metal plate that detached from a feeder during maintenance work at Conveyor Belt 20. The incident occurred while Nfunda was assisting with the removal of choked material, underscoring the risks faced by workers in mining operations.

Mimbula Minerals is owned by Moxico Resources PLC, a mining company headquartered in the United Kingdom.

The accident highlights persistent occupational safety challenges in Zambia’s mining sector, particularly in maintenance and plant operations.

It raises questions about the responsibility of foreign investors to uphold stringent safety standards and ensure adequate training and protective measures for local employees.

The tragedy underscores the need for stronger labour inspections, compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, and enforcement of international best practices.

Mining remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s economy, but accidents like this erode public trust in investor accountability.

The incident is likely to fuel calls for enhanced safety audits, transparent reporting of workplace accidents, and stronger collaboration between government regulators and mining companies.

For workers, it reinforces the importance of union advocacy and workplace safety committees to ensure their voices are heard in demanding safer conditions.
