The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has issued a
strong call for mining companies to improve transparency in production
reporting and invest in dignified housing for workers, as part of a broader
push to align the sector with Zambia’s development goals.
During a working tour of mining operations in Kasempa District, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Dr. Hapenga Kabeta expressed concern over underreporting of copper output, warning that such practices distort Zambia’s true production figures and undermine national planning.
He directed the Mine Safety Department to enforce penalties
against non-compliant firms and ensure adherence to safety and reporting
regulations.
Dr. Kabeta also condemned the continued use of hostel-style
accommodation for mine workers, describing it as “demeaning and disruptive to
family life.”
He emphasized that housing workers within mining zones
violates existing regulations and urged companies to collaborate with local
councils and private developers to build sustainable townships with schools,
clinics, and social amenities.
“Mining companies must invest in permanent housing and
support homeownership for employees. These developments should endure beyond
the life of the mines,” Dr. Kabeta stated.
The tour also spotlighted Katokamema Mines, a 100%
Zambian-owned operation that has invested $50 million and produced 14,000
tonnes of copper ore in its first two months.
The company has allocated 15% of its shares to local chiefs
and the community, signaling a commitment to inclusive growth and shared
prosperity.
This intervention reflects the government’s broader agenda to formalize the mining sector, enhance community benefits, and ensure that Zambia’s mineral wealth translates into long-term socio-economic development.
