A surgeon at Chama District Hospital has been arrested
for the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl, which has left the juvenile
five months pregnant.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson
Mweemba confirmed the arrest, identifying the suspect as Dr. Frank Kapendi, 43,
of Chief Kambombo’s area.
Police said the survivor reported the matter at Chama
Police Station on May 2, 2026, complaining of discomfort and persistent stomach
pain. She disclosed that she had been defiled and impregnated by a known adult
male, later identified as Dr. Kapendi.
Officers moved swiftly and apprehended the suspect on May
5, 2026. During interviews, Kapendi admitted to having sexual intercourse with
the victim about five months ago, aligning with medical findings that confirmed
the pregnancy.
Police further revealed that the suspect led officers to
his house, pointing to the bed he allegedly used to commit the crime.
Mr. Mweemba confirmed that Kapendi has been formally
charged with defilement of a child under 16 years of age, contrary to Zambian
law. He is currently in custody awaiting his first court appearance.
The alleged offence occurred on an unknown date between January 1, 2024, and April 27, 2026, in Chief Kambombo’s area, Chama District.
