President Hakainde Hichilema has cautioned UPND members
who plan to contest as independent candidates after losing party adoption that
they should not expect appointments into government.
Speaking during a community engagement in Kalabo
District, the Head of State urged ruling party members to remain united and
rally behind candidates adopted by the UPND ahead of the 2026 general
elections.
“There will always be one person at a time, what is
important is for us to win UPND councillor, mayor, MP and President,” Hichilema
said.
He emphasized that loyalty to the party is critical,
noting that members who are not adopted could still be considered for
government or diplomatic appointments if they remain disciplined.
“Some of those who will not stand will be appointed as
ambassadors and in the foreign service. Some will be appointed in government,
and some will be nominated,” he stated.
However, the President warned that those who rebel and
stand as independents risk shutting themselves out from future opportunities.
“If you become hungry and you start running as
Independent, we will not appoint you as ambassadors,” Hichilema cautioned.
The remarks highlight the ruling party’s push for unity
and discipline as Zambia heads toward the 2026 polls.
