The Government has suspended operations at two
Chinese-operated mines in Kasempa District, North-Western Province, after
uncovering illegal processing of gold and copper ore. The affected mines, Sino
Octascene Mine and Ken Reliable Mine, were found operating without the required
mineral processing licenses.
The violations were discovered during an inspection led by Ministry
of Mines and Minerals Development, Permanent Secretary at the Dr. Hapenga
Kabeta, alongside officials from the Mine Safety Department. Authorities found
substantial stockpiles of gold- and copper-bearing ore at both sites, prepared
for processing without legal authorization.
“The sources of the seized ore will be further investigated,
and any illegalities will be sternly dealt with,” Dr. Kabeta stated.
When questioned, mine officials failed to produce valid
documentation or provide satisfactory explanations regarding their operations.
In response, the Ministry seized the ore stockpiles and
directed law enforcement officers to secure the materials until proper
documentation is presented.
Dr. Kabeta emphasized the government’s commitment to curbing
illegal mining activities, particularly in the gold sector, and stressed the
importance of transparency in mineral trade to support Zambia’s national
development.
He added that the Ministry is now tightening monitoring mechanisms for mineral processing plants across the country to ensure full compliance with regulations
