The Kitwe Vocational Training Centre (KVTC) has
successfully trained more than 350 heavy duty mining equipment operators now
serving within Zambia’s mining industry, thanks to the operationalisation of
its heavy-duty equipment workshop supported by Japan’s US$4 million investment.
Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati, who
toured the workshop over the weekend, said the initiative strengthens Zambia’s
mining skills base and advances technical and vocational education.
“KVTC offers a range of vocational training programmes,
including Heavy Equipment Repair, Automotive Mechanics, Metal Fabrication,
Welding, and Entrepreneurship. The institution remains committed to providing
quality technical and vocational education that promotes self-reliance,
industrial productivity, and national development,” Mutati said.
The programme was implemented through collaboration
between the Government of Zambia, the Government of Japan, and Hitachi, which
supplied heavy-duty mining equipment and technical support.
Mutati disclosed that the next phase of the partnership
will focus on training technicians in repair and maintenance of dump trucks and
front-end loaders, under a newly signed memorandum of understanding with
Hitachi.
He emphasized that developing specialized technical
skills is essential to supporting Zambia’s ambitious copper production targets,
positioning KVTC as a strategic institution in industrial growth.
