Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), in partnership with Chillerton,
has launched a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at
improving access to education and enhancing community welfare in the Kanyemo
area of Chililabombwe District.
The programme forms part of KCM’s broader CSR agenda, which
focuses on sustainable development in host communities through investments in education,
infrastructure, health, and social welfare. Planned interventions include the construction
of school infrastructure, support to local farmers, and upgrades to feeder
roads to stimulate economic activity and improve accessibility.
As part of the launch, KCM and Chillerton distributed educational
materials to 193 children, including school bags, exercise books, drinking
bottles, shoes, and other essentials designed to reduce barriers to education.
In addition, KCM donated 2,000 sanitary wear packs to women and schoolgirls to
support menstrual hygiene, promote dignity, and improve school attendance among
girls.
The event was attended by Chililabombwe District
Commissioner Kellys Jibinga and Chief Chilemina of the Lamba people, who
commended the initiative. Chief Chilemina urged parents to prioritise education
and discourage early marriages, noting that the support provided has the
potential to transform lives and create a better future for children.
District Commissioner Jibinga welcomed KCM’s approach of
involving business partners in CSR programmes, saying such collaborations
strengthen development impact in host communities. He encouraged further
investment in classroom construction to expand educational opportunities.
KCM CSR Manager Brian Siatubi said the company is
intensifying efforts to involve business partners in community development
initiatives across its areas of operation.
“Several business partners have already come on board to
support welfare initiatives, including assistance to orphanages and the
construction of school infrastructure. Chillerton is the latest partner to
join, with further CSR interventions planned to expand support in education and
community development,” Siatubi explained.
