The tragic death of Amoo Kalusa, a Zambian truck driver found dead in his vehicle at Martins Drift border, has reignited calls for the legalization of “lorry boys”, informal assistants who support truck drivers during long-haul journeys.

Kalusa, affectionately known as Kamwemfu among peers, was discovered lifeless in his truck under circumstances that remain unclear.

While not attributed to a road accident, his passing has shaken Zambia’s trucking community, highlighting the isolation, health risks, and lack of support systems faced by drivers operating across borders.

In the wake of this tragedy, a fellow driver’s viral Facebook post advocating for the formal recognition of lorry boys has gained traction.

These assistants often young men working without contracts or protections help with Loading and unloading cargo, navigating difficult terrain, providing security during overnight stops, Assisting with minor mechanical issues

Despite their utility, lorry boys remain unregulated, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and denying drivers the support they need.

The proposal aligns with earlier calls by MP Sunday Chanda, who urged government-led tripartite dialogue to improve labour conditions in the transport sector.

While some stakeholders worry about increased operational costs and employer resistance, others argue that formalizing the role could improve safety, reduce fatigue-related incidents, and create jobs for youth.
