Aspiring Member of Parliament for Mkushi North, Mr.
Topson Kunda, has proposed the introduction of a law that would allow all civil
servants in Zambia to receive two salaries in December as a way of easing
financial pressure during the festive season and the reopening of schools in
January.
Under the proposal Civil servants would receive a full
additional salary before Christmas.
A quarter salary in the first week of January to help
cover school fees and educational expenses.the additional payments would be
protected from deductions by lending institutions, regardless of existing loan
obligations.
Mr. Kunda explained that the idea was inspired by his
experience as District Commissioner for Chitambo, where he observed that many
civil servants struggled financially at the start of each year due to festive
costs and school requirements.
He argued that civil servants deserve greater
appreciation for their contribution to national development and should benefit
from improved welfare measures.
“Many public workers are unable to fully enjoy Christmas
and New Year celebrations because they prioritize saving money for
school-related expenses in January,” Kunda said.
