Government has urged young people in North-Western Province to take advantage of opportunities in the mining sector through legal and structured channels, while steering clear of drug and substance abuse.

Speaking during a Town Hall Meeting held in Solwezi as part of the 2026 National Youth Week celebrations, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis C. Nkandu said the province’s rapid growth, largely driven by mining activities, presents significant opportunities for young people to participate in economic development.

Nkandu emphasized the importance of engaging in lawful mining activities, noting that government wants youths to benefit from the mining value chain in an organized manner.

“We want young people to position themselves not only for employment in the mining sector but also as entrepreneurs and service providers supplying goods and services to mining companies,” he said.

The Minister added that government is working to ensure that young people benefit from employment, skills development, and supply opportunities linked to the mining industry.

He also encouraged youths to explore other sectors such as agriculture, ICT, sports, and the creative industries to promote sustainable economic participation.

Nkandu expressed concern over the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse among young people, warning that such vices undermine their potential and productivity.

He said government, working with stakeholders, is strengthening awareness, counselling, and rehabilitation efforts to address the problem.

Meanwhile, North-Western Province Minister Robert Lihefu reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensuring that youths benefit from the many economic opportunities created by mining and other sectors.

“Young people must remain proactive, acquire relevant skills, and take advantage of empowerment programmes being implemented by government,” he said.
