A proposed $250,000 Copper Concentrator Plant by Red Oaks
Investments Company Limited in Musakashi Ward, Kalulushi District, has sparked
both optimism and environmental caution among stakeholders.
The project, expected to create over 100 direct jobs, was
the focus of a public consultation meeting held along the Chingola–Kitwe Road.
Community members, local leaders, and environmental experts gathered to review
the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and raise concerns about
potential risks.
Residents voiced fears over possible contamination of the Musakashi
Stream, which connects to the Kafue River, a vital water source for surrounding
communities.
Charles Sikaona, an environmental consultant from Arc Enviro,
confirmed that water quality tests revealed unsafe levels of coliform bacteria,
although air quality remains within acceptable standards.
“You cannot compromise environmental safety for short-term
economic gains,” Sikaona warned, citing erosion-prone soils, acidic ground
conditions, and a critical groundwater aquifer near Miombo woodland zones.
Youth groups and community members called for stronger Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments, including upgrades to the Musakashi
Health Post, support for the local secondary school, and investment in clean
water systems.
In response, Red Oaks Investments pledged full compliance
with environmental regulations and transparency in operations. The company
stated that its tailings dam would be lined and closely monitored to prevent
contamination.
Kalulushi Deputy Mayor Hastings Banda welcomed the investment but urged the company to uphold accountability and prioritize community welfare.
