Former employees of the United Bus Company of Zambia (UBZ) have once again appealed to Government for resolution of their unpaid terminal benefits, nearly 30 years after the company’s liquidation in 1995.

At a press conference held at Fairview Hotel, representatives including Mr. Elias Mwima, Ms. Theresa Zulu, and Pastor John Nyirongo expressed deep frustration over the prolonged delay, citing economic hardship, lack of access to loans, and the death of over 475 former workers without compensation.

We’ve struggled to rebuild our lives. We believe President Hichilema’s leadership will bring resolution,” said Mr. Mwima.

Key Issues Raised Liquidation Fallout: UBZ’s assets, worth an estimated US$5.5 billion, were handed back to Government in 2001, but former workers were excluded from dividend payments, Initial liquidation reports suggested terminal benefits would be handled outside liquidation law, yet workers were later referred back to expired agreements

Former employees were classified as unsecured creditors, leaving them out of the fourth dividend payment in 2006, Promised housing deductions from terminal benefits never materialized, and ex-workers did not benefit from remaining UBZ properties

Multiple petitions have been submitted to the late former President and President Hakainde Hichilema, as well as the Secretary to Cabinet, with no resolution to date

The Committee of Inspection for UBZ (in liquidation) continues to push for a logical conclusion to the matter.
