Ministry of Labour and social security Commissioner Givens
Muntengwa has issued a clear message to Cochrane Trucking Limited the
Ministry’s role is not to shut down businesses, but to educate and enforce
compliance in the interest of workers and national development.
During an unannounced inspection, Muntengwa emphasized that
surprise visits are part of the Ministry’s strategy to observe real-time
workplace conditions and ensure that both management and employees are adhering
to Zambia’s labour laws.
“We will come unannounced so that we catch you napping,”
Muntengwa told Cochrane’s management. “Our duty is not to shut down companies
but to educate both workers and management, and ensure you are doing the right
thing.”
The Commissioner’s remarks reflect a broader shift in Zambia’s labour enforcement approach one that prioritizes collaborative compliance, worker education, and employer accountability over punitive action.
