President Hakainde Hichilema has announced the successful commissioning of the Kitumba Mine, a transformative US$560 million copper investment in Mumbwa District, which has already created 2,500 direct and indirect jobs for local communities.
Speaking through Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba at the Ikubi Lya Loongo Traditional Ceremony, the President emphasized that the mine aligns with Zambia’s national goal to increase copper production to 3 million metric tonnes by 2030.
“We are happy to announce that Kitumba Mine in Mumbwa has been successfully launched,” he stated.
He said the Expected to process 4.5 million tonnes of ore annually, yielding 50,000 tonnes of refined copper with a 50-megawatt solar power plant will feed into the local grid, enhancing power supply for agriculture, tourism, education, and small-scale industry and Over 2,500 jobs created, with potential for more as operations scale.
The pasident further said that the project is hailed as a model for nvironmentally responsible mining, balancing economic growth with clean energy.
The mine, operated by Sinomine Kitumba Minerals, is one of the largest mining investments under President Hichilema’s administration and is expected to catalyze infrastructure development, including roads, bridges, and telecommunications
