Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Hapenga Kabeta, accompanied by Deputy Permanent Secretary Luckson Mulumbi, led a working tour including inspections of Katokamema Mines and Sino Mines in Kasempa District of mining operations in North Western Province.
The tour, which, is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure that mining companies adhere to safety, environmental, and
production reporting standards.
Katokamema Mines, a fully Zambian-owned operation, has been
lauded for its community-inclusive model, having allocated 15% of its shares to
local chiefs and residents, and producing 14,000 tonnes of copper ore within
its first two months of operation.
Dr. Kabeta expressed concern over underreporting of production figures by some operators, warning that such practices distort Zambia’s true copper output.
He directed the Mine Safety Department to enforce
penalties on non-compliant firms and emphasized the need for accurate data to
inform national planning.
Dr. Kabeta condemned the outdated practice of accommodating
employees in hostels within mining zones, calling it “demeaning and disruptive
to family life.” Which also spotlighted housing conditions for mine workers.
He urged companies to collaborate with local councils and private developers to build sustainable townships with schools, clinics, and permanent housing.
He underscored the government’s commitment to formalizing the mining sector, empowering local enterprises, and ensuring long-term community benefits.
