Malawi’s High Commissioner to Zambia, Her Excellency Margaret Kamoto,
has described Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) as a beacon of mining excellence on
the African continent, following a familiarization tour of the Konkola Deep
Mining Project (KDMP) in Chililabombwe.
High Commissioner Kamoto, who was accompanied by her delegation, said
the visit was aimed at appreciating the mine’s operations and underscoring the
deep ties between Malawi and Zambia.
“KCM is one of Zambia’s proudest industrial achievements and a symbol of
strength and resilience of the nation’s economy,” she said.
She noted that Malawi celebrates Zambia’s achievements in the mining
sector and looks forward to learning from its expertise to develop Malawi’s own
mineral potential.
“The success of mines like KCM can serve as a catalyst for strengthening
industrial linkages between our two countries, creating opportunities for
Malawian suppliers, engineers and other professionals,” Kamoto added.
The envoy emphasized that Malawi is keen to deepen cooperation with KCM
in geological surveying, value addition, policy design, and sustainable mining
governance.
Kamoto also commended KCM’s efforts in promoting responsible mining
practices, environmental protection, and community development, acknowledging
its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
“Mining must not just be about the extraction of minerals, but about the upliftment of communities through responsible CSR,” she said.
