The Ministry of Health announced the development during commemorations, describing the drug as a breakthrough that expands the country’s pre‑exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) options and strengthens efforts to curb new infections.

Lenacapavir is a long‑acting injectable ARV designed for HIV prevention, reducing the burden of daily oral PrEP.

Chief Pharmacist Davies Kampamba said the launch represents “a significant step forward” in Zambia’s fight against HIV.

Public interest in the injectable has been strong, with many Zambians eager to understand how the new prevention method works.

Media orientation sessions have been held to educate journalists on dosing schedules, safety, and target users, ensuring accurate public communication.

Zambia continues to face challenges with new HIV infections, particularly among young people and vulnerable groups. While oral PrEP has been available, adherence has been inconsistent. The introduction of a long‑acting injectable is expected to improve uptake and effectiveness, offering greater choice and convenience.

The Ministry emphasized that the launch is part of a wider strategy to strengthen prevention, treatment, and awareness, ensuring that Zambia remains on track toward achieving its UNAIDS 95‑95‑95 targets.
