The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has destroyed
assorted non‑compliant products valued at K520,357, following enforcement
activities conducted across the country throughout 2025.
The destruction exercise, carried out in Lusaka on Wednesday
afternoon, was conducted in line with the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of
2017, which empowers the agency to remove and destroy products that pose risks
to public health, safety, and the environment.
The seized items included Expired, banned, and unregistered
goods, Substandard and poorly packaged products and illegally supplied items
that failed to meet compulsory standards
Among the destroyed products were shoe polish, male latex
condoms, clear beer, fruit‑flavoured drinks, potable spirits, crude vegetable
oil, peanut butter, biscuits, packaged drinking water, and used underwear.
The products were confiscated during routine inspections in:
Rufunsa, Kamwala Trading Area, Makeni, Chaisa, Chinika Industrial Area, Soweto
Market, and PHI.
ZCSA said the items failed to meet the minimum requirements
for supply on the Zambian market, posing potential dangers to consumers.
The agency has warned traders and entities against supplying
non‑compliant products, stressing that it will take stern action against
violators.
“It is a legal requirement for any producer or importer of
regulated products to obtain approval from ZCSA before supplying them on the
market,” the agency stated.
Manufacturers and importers are urged to ensure their
products meet prescribed compulsory standards to prevent harm to consumers and
the environment.
As the festive season approaches, ZCSA has advised consumers
to remain vigilant and purchase goods only from trusted sources. The public is
encouraged to report suspicious products to the nearest ZCSA office at border
points, provincial centres, or the head office in Lusaka.
ZCSA, a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade
and Industry, regulates 102 products covered by compulsory standards, including
food and beverages, solar equipment, chemicals, construction materials,
electrical appliances, petroleum products, used motor vehicles, fertiliser,
fuel, and used textiles.
