Administrative operations at Munali Nickel Mine in Mazabuka
were brought to a standstill on Tuesday morning after former workers stormed
the premises, blocking the main entrance in protest.
According to reports, the ex‑employees, previously engaged
through Mabiza Resources Limited which is now under liquidation, staged the
protest by singing and chanting in solidarity.
Their demand was clear: the release of contract termination
letters to enable them to access benefits from the Saturna Pension Scheme.
Speaking collectively, the workers lamented that the
indefinite closure of the mine and the non‑payment of salaries for four months
had reduced them to “beggars.”
Last week, mine management issued a memo announcing plans to
begin issuing terminal letters. However, on Tuesday, the protesting workers
were denied access to the premises,
Human Resource Manager for Albidon Mine Pauline Sakala,
which has taken over operations at Munali Nickel, explained in a memo that the
protestors were barred from entering for safety and operational reasons.
She urged the workers to wait for the Liquidator to provide
guidance on the way forward regarding their grievances.
