Minister of Transport and Logistics Frank Tayali has
urged Zambian truck drivers to adopt safety strategies such as travelling in
groups when crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in order to
minimise the risk of attacks.
Speaking at Sakania border in Ndola, Mr Tayali said
convoy travel, already practiced by drivers of other nationalities, enhances
safety and allows truckers to look out for one another while in foreign
territory.
The Minister made the remarks before receiving the body
of Joseph Chivanga, a Zambian truck driver who went missing earlier this month
and was later discovered dead in DRC.
Mr Tayali assured drivers that Government is actively
engaging Congolese authorities to address the rising insecurity affecting
truckers. He emphasised that protecting Zambian drivers remains a priority.
Truck drivers, led by State House Drivers Desk
representative Austin Mwiinga, called on Government to strengthen security
engagements with DRC authorities to ensure their safety during cross‑border
assignments.
Speaking on behalf of Mr Chivanga’s family, Chali Kasonde
thanked Government for facilitating the repatriation of his body.
Mr Chivanga went missing while transporting acid to
Kolwezi, later the body was discovered
at Ntenke Fungulume mortuary in DRC and Government officials formally received
his remains at Sakania border and handed them over to his family.
