The Ministry of Health has announced plans to recruit an
additional 2,500 health workers, mostly doctors, this year as part of efforts
to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended ratio of 1 doctor to
1,000 patients.
In an interview Minister of Health Dr. Elijah Muchima said that the Ministry is working closely with the main doctors’ association and the Public Service Commission to promote and recruit doctors and other health workers who have been in the database up to 2023.
He emphasized government’s determination to reduce the
gap between patients and health workers.
Over 20,000 health professionals have already been
employed in the past four years.
Dr. Muchima highlighted that Zambia’s growing population
necessitates the recruitment of more health workers to ensure adequate service
delivery.
The government is exploring external financing options to
support the initiative.
He said move is expected to strengthen the country’s
healthcare system and improve access to medical services.
The planned recruitment underscores government’s commitment to healthcare expansion, aligning with WHO standards and addressing the challenges of an increasing patient load.
