Police in Kalulushi have charged Jesper Chikuwe, 32, with negligence
following the tragic death of Subila Mulenga, a pupil at Cleveland School, who
died after falling through a hole in the floor of a school bus on Tuesday.
Authorities have not ruled out upgrading the charge to manslaughter
as investigations continue.
The toddler was seated next to her elder brother inside the
school bus which was used as a plank that had been used to cover a hole in the
bus floor shifted, causing the child to fall through and was then run over by
the same vehicle.
Despite screams from her brother urging the driver to stop,
Chikuwe continued driving.
The girl was later picked up by another vehicle and rushed
to hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police have charged Chikuwe with negligence, citing failure
to ensure the safety of passengers.
Investigators say the possibility of a manslaughter charge
remains open, depending on the outcome of further inquiries.
The incident has sparked outrage and grief within the
Kalulushi community, with parents and residents calling for stricter safety
standards for school transport.
Concerns have been raised about the condition of vehicles
used to ferry children, with calls for regular inspections and enforcement of
road safety laws.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and the case will proceed to court once all evidence has been compiled.
