The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has confirmed the arrest of Mr. Dauti Jalandi, an Assistant Labour Officer based at the Chitambo District Labour Office, by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on allegations of soliciting a bribe from Chi-Metals Limited, a manganese processing plant.

Mr. Jalandi allegedly solicited K10,000 between 1st and 31st October 2023 as an inducement to protect the company from sanctions by the Labour Commissioner’s office.

In a statement issued by Ministry of Labour and Social Security Principal Public Relations Officer Mwaka Ndawa has since suspended the officer to allow investigations in line with the disciplinary code of conduct.

Ms Ndawa reiterated its zero tolerance for corruption, emphasizing its commitment to integrity, professionalism, and transparency.

It assured the public that corruption has no place in the public service and pledged full cooperation with the ACC in ongoing investigations.

Stakeholders are encouraged to report unethical conduct to the Integrity Committee, the ACC, or other law enforcement agencies.

Officers are reminded to uphold professionalism and integrity, with any misconduct to be addressed decisively.

She said that the Ministry continues to recognize officers who demonstrate integrity. In 2023, Assistant Labour Commissioner for Industrial Relations, Emelda Sichone, received the ACC Director General’s Integrity Award at the Chief Executive Officer’s Forum.

Integrity and professionalism remain central to the Ministry’s mandate of promoting decent work, safe workplaces, and equitable labour practices.

To strengthen accountability, the Ministry has Established an Integrity Committee in collaboration with the ACC. Developed a Gifts Policy to regulate the receiving of gifts. Initiated Conflict of Interest and Whistleblower Protection Policies, currently under finalization. Field operations are covered live to promote transparency in labour matters.

The Ministry assures workers, employers, and the public of its continued commitment to fostering a transparent, fair, and safe environment in all workplaces. Reporting unethical practices will ensure Zambia’s labour sector remains ethical, accountable, and people-centered.
