Caritas
Zambia has welcomed President Hakainde Hichilema’s address
to the Fifth
Session of the Thirteenth National Assembly, acknowledging
strides in economic
growth, market confidence, and rule of law.
However, the Catholic organization has called for more concrete and
actionable solutions to address the power crisis,
unemployment,
and rising
cost of living.
In a statement issued by Caritas Zambia Executive Director Fr Dr Gabriel Mapulanga,
noted that while macroeconomic achievements are commendable, the speech did not
sufficiently reflect the daily struggles of ordinary citizens.
“Issues such as load shedding, which continues to affect the daily lives of
Zambians despite the recent rainfall and the filling up of Kariba Dam, require
more detailed and actionable solutions,” Fr Mapulanga said.
He emphasized that expressions of regret, though appreciated, must be
followed by clear
plans and timelines to restore public confidence in energy
reliability.
Load shedding remains disruptive despite improved water levels at Kariba, Youth unemployment is alarming, with over 100,000 graduates annually and only 2,000–20,000 jobs created and Cost of living continues to rise, threatening household stability
“Without meaningful employment, the economic progress highlighted by the President will not translate into improved livelihoods,” Fr Mapulanga added.
Fr Mapulanga urged the government to present comprehensive strategies that directly address livelihoods, job creation, and energy security, stressing that citizens need practical solutions, not just policy declarations.
