MINER DIES IN MOPANI UNDERGROUND ACCIDENT

Police in Mufulira have confirmed a fatal underground mining accident at Mopani Copper Mines, involving 33-year-old dump truck operator Benson Kapembwa of Maina Soko Avenue.

Mr. Kapembwa, employed by Meeches Mining through SKT Global, reported for work on 1 February but did not return home the following day.

His wife raised concerns after learning from colleagues that he had not surfaced.

A search team discovered his body on 3 February 2026 at the 1040-meter level of the Mopani Mufulira mine.

He was found sitting inside the dump truck machine and rushed to Malcom Watson Mine Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Copperbelt Police Deputy Commissioner Geddy Divayi confirmed the incident, stating that an inquiry file has been opened and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.

Mopani Copper Mines has announced the immediate suspension of all underground mining operations conducted by Reliant Mining in Kitwe and Mufulira following two fatal accidents in less than three weeks.

The suspension will remain in force until Full investigations are completed, Reliant Mining submits a comprehensive safety plan and Mopani reviews and verifies readiness to implement corrective and preventive measures.

Mopani CEO Eng. Charles Sakanya has begun mass safety meetings with underground employees and supervisors in Kitwe and Mufulira.

Mopani reiterated its strong commitment to responsible mining, stressing that every employee and contractor must return home safely after every shift.
