By Chiluba Mapulanga In a landmark move aimed at unlocking the full potential of Zambia’s gold industry, the Government has officially appointed ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc (ZCCM-IH) to lead the formalisation, development, and transformation of the country’s gold sector. In a statement Issued by ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc Corporate Affairs Manager Loisa Mbatha announced the strategic shift in Zambia’s approach to gold mining, which has long been dominated by informal operations with limited structure, low value retention, and minimal economic benefits for surrounding communities. Ms. Mbatha underscored that ZCCM-IH will spearhead a comprehensive initiative designed to Integrate artisanal and small-scale miners into the formal economy, promote safe and environmentally responsible mining practices, enhance local value addition and retention and Strengthen partnerships with communities, traditional leaders, civil society, and the private sector She said the programme draws inspiration from successful models in countries such as Australia, Brazil, and India, where formalisation has led to increased revenue, improved livelihoods, and stronger governance. “This mandate reflects a bold and forward-looking commitment to inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” Mbatha stated. She emphasized company’s dedication to executing the mandate with integrity, transparency, and national responsibility, assuring stakeholders of regular updates as the programme unfolds. Mineral tenements transferred to ZCCM-IH will serve as foundational assets for the initiative, aligning with the company’s mission to create tangible wealth sustainably for the benefit of the Zambian people.
