President Hakainde Hichilema has directed civil servants
to eliminate unproductive processes and deliver tangible, measurable results as
government intensifies efforts to drive productivity and economic growth.
Speaking during the National Delivery Day, held under the
theme “From Commitments to Results, delivering for the People”, the Head
of State described the occasion as a defining moment in the government’s reform
agenda, anchored on the work of the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU).
President Hichilema cautioned against inefficiencies in
public administration, urging public officers to reflect on their role in
delivering outcomes that directly benefit citizens.
He stressed that outdated systems must give way to
impactful action, noting that policies, programmes, and projects must be
people-centred and responsive to national priorities.
“Don’t repeat processes that deliver nothing. Citizens
want results, not endless procedures,” he said.
The President highlighted that effective service delivery
is directly linked to improved working conditions within the public sector.
He noted that if civil servants fulfilled their mandate,
their own conditions of service would improve.
He further urged officers to uphold national priorities
above personal interests, stressing that prudent decision-making and
prioritisation are critical in the face of limited resources. “Resources are
always limited; it’s the choices you make and your priorities,” he said.
On economic transformation, President Hichilema
reiterated government’s strategy to strengthen provincial productivity through
decentralised growth.
He announced plans to establish a balance sheet for each
province, ensuring regional economies drive national development.
Citing progress in addressing pension challenges, the
President pointed to the clearance of a 20-year backlog as an example of
results-driven governance.
He also called for professionalism, efficiency, and a
positive work ethic in public service, encouraging civil servants to take pride
in their work.
“Enjoy the work you do. A sense of satisfaction brings
pride. Pride is different from arrogance; let’s be proud of what we can do for
the people,” he said.
