By Chiluba Mapulanga A tragic workplace accident has claimed the life of Joseph Phiri, a 51-year-old council worker, who was crushed to death while offloading a vibrator roller machine at the Lusaka City Council Highway Section Depot. The incident occurred as Phiri attempted to offload the 570-kilogram machine from a canter truck. According to eyewitnesses, the equipment lost control during the process, fatally trapping him beneath its weight. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, with early indications pointing to possible mechanical failure or procedural oversight. The Lusaka City Council has yet to issue an official statement, but colleagues described Phiri as a dedicated worker with years of service in road maintenance operations. The tragedy has reignited calls for improved occupational safety standards, particularly for frontline municipal workers who operate heavy machinery. Labour unions and safety advocates are urging the Council to conduct a full safety audit and provide enhanced training and protective measures for staff. Mr Phiri’s body has been taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary, and funeral arrangements are underway.
