President Hakainde Hichilema has called on Zambia’s young people to pursue productive lives anchored on education, skills development, and entrepreneurship, as the country commemorated National Youth Day 2026 under the theme “Arise and Soar.”

Speaking in Solwezi, North-Western Province, the Head of State said Zambia’s future depends on a generation of youths willing to innovate, lead, and contribute meaningfully to national development through hard work and determination.

He cautioned against destructive lifestyles, particularly drug and alcohol abuse, urging young people to choose productivity over vice.

President Hichilema emphasized the importance of skills-based education, alongside university training, as a pathway to entrepreneurship and employment.

“We must not focus on university education alone. Skills education is equally important because it equips our young people with the practical abilities needed to build our country and create opportunities,” he said.

The President highlighted government’s ongoing efforts to expand employment opportunities, noting that youths have been the largest beneficiaries of jobs created in the health sector (18,000), teaching sector and military wings (45,000 combined). He reaffirmed government’s determination to continue creating opportunities that enable young people to participate fully in Zambia’s economic growth.

A key highlight of the celebrations was the launch of the Imisepela Jobs, Opportunities and Funding App, a digital platform designed to connect citizens to employment opportunities, skills programmes, and funding support.

The President said the initiative reflects government’s commitment to leveraging technology to promote inclusion and ensure opportunities reach those who need them most.

The app will serve as a one-stop digital hub where users can access job openings, training opportunities, grants, and other forms of support.

President Hichilema noted that many young people struggle to access information about available opportunities, and the platform will help bridge that gap.

He encouraged youths to take advantage of the app by acquiring skills, embracing entrepreneurship, and actively seeking opportunities that will enable them to contribute to national development.

“The future of Zambia lies in a productive, innovative and hardworking youth population,” he said.
