A tragic accident along Kafue Road has claimed the life
of a bus conductor after he was struck by the very vehicle he worked on.
Zambia Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the
incident in a statement, saying it occurred around 14:30 hours near Grandview
School in Shimabala.
The accident involved a Toyota Hiace minibus
(registration BAJ 6781) driven by Amos Phiri, 33. According to police, Phiri
had initially passed a group of potential passengers but later stopped and
began reversing towards them.
At that moment, the conductor, Abraham Nkhata, 27,
disembarked and moved to the rear of the vehicle to assist. Unaware of his
presence, Phiri continued reversing and struck Nkhata, causing severe head
injuries.
Nkhata was rushed to Kafue District General Hospital but
was declared dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the hospital
mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, police have impounded the minibus and detained
Phiri for further investigation
