The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has officially
announced the creation of 70 new constituencies, increasing the total number of
parliamentary seats from 156 to 226.
Speaking at the Mulungushi International Conference
Centre, ECZ Chairperson Mrs. Mwangala Zaloumis, SC described the development as
a significant milestone in Zambia’s democratic journey, aimed at strengthening
inclusivity, improving access to elected representatives, and deepening
governance.
The delimitation exercise was conducted in line with the Constitution
of Zambia (Amendment) Act No.13 of 2025, which mandated the expansion of
constituencies. The Mushabati Technical Committee on Constitutional Amendments
had earlier recommended the increase after nationwide consultations, noting
strong public support for improved service delivery and equitable resource
distribution.
Provincial Allocation of New Constituencies:
With this expansion, Zambia’s ten provinces now have
increased representation: Central (23), Copperbelt (29), Eastern (29), Luapula
(20), Lusaka (18), Muchinga (14), Northern (19), North-Western (19), Southern
(29), and Western (26).
