The Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ) has reported 10
aspiring politicians to the police after discovering they submitted forged
Grade 12 certificates ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Election.
The revelation follows the conclusion of the certificate
verification exercise on May 22, which saw ECZ issue 10,731 confirmation
letters 10,020 processed through the online system and 711 via physical
submission.
“To our disappointment, a total of 10 documents were
found not to be genuine or forged. It is disappointing that those who aspire to
be our leaders continue to present forged documents, even when it is public
knowledge now that the Council has all the records of qualifications, going
back up to the 1960s,” said ECZ Executive Director Michael Chilala.
Police in Eastern Province confirmed to Breeze FM that
investigations have already begun into a mayoral candidate implicated in the
scandal.
Meanwhile, ECZ expressed concern over the number of
leaders who claimed to have lost their original certificates between the 2021
elections and 2026, noting that 334 certificates were replaced during the
verification exercise.
Chilala urged political leaders to safeguard their
certificates, describing them as security documents, and assured the public
that ECZ had performed its role with integrity and diligence.
