Humanitarian Remmy Kangwa has raised alarm over the
growing promotion of betting advertisements on national media platforms,
questioning why institutions meant to protect citizens are helping normalize
gambling.
Kangwa revealed that he personally stopped advertising
betting years ago after witnessing its destructive impact on young Zambians,
noting that gambling addiction has cost people their peace of mind, jobs,
purpose, and in some cases even their lives.
He expressed concern that platforms such as ZNBC Today
continue to air betting adverts despite ongoing conversations about protecting
youths from addiction and poverty.
“When gambling is repeatedly promoted on television,
radio, and social media, it slowly becomes normalized as a way of survival
instead of hard work and empowerment,” Kangwa warned.
He added that national platforms should remain spaces
where children and families can access content that educates, inspires, and
builds the future, rather than content that contributes to social harm.
“What we normalize today will shape the future of our
nation tomorrow,” he said.
