As Zambia commemorates 61 years of independence, the Non-governmental Gender
Organisation Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has raised concern
over the continued marginalisation of women and girls, warning that
deep-rooted gender inequalities remain largely unaddressed despite national
progress.
Speaking during the independence week reflections, NGOCC Acting Board
Chairperson Faides Tembatemba acknowledged Zambia’s
achievements in peace, stability, and democratic governance, but
emphasized that economic hardship, gender-based violence (GBV), and limited political
representation continue to undermine women’s empowerment.
“True independence will only be realised when every Zambian, regardless of
gender, can participate equally in the country’s development,” ,Ms Tembatemba stated.
NGOCC cited statistics showing that women disproportionately bear the burden of poverty,
with the national poverty rate at 60 percent, and women comprising the
majority of those affected. GBV remains widespread, with 80 percent of victims
being women, prompting calls for stronger enforcement of
laws, support for survivors, and nationwide campaigns
to challenge harmful cultural norms.
Ms Tembatemba also highlighted the underrepresentation of women in politics,
noting that women hold fewer than 25 parliamentary seats out of 167 and occupy less than 10 percent of
local government positions.
“We demand that government pass the Political Parties Law, which would
require political parties to adopt quotas for women, youth, and persons with
disabilities ahead of the 2026 general elections,” she urged.
NGOCC further called on government to prioritize gender-responsive policies, including economic empowerment initiatives and investment in education and skills development for women and girls.
