The Lusaka City Council (LCC)
has suspended operations at Ziyang Manufacturing Company Limited for
severe breaches of public health regulations, following a joint inspection with
the Ministry of Health and Chawama General Hospital.
The inspection at the company’s Makeni-based
facility uncovered shocking conditions, including reports that over 80
workers were locked inside the premises during working hours and forced to
use buckets as toilets due to management’s claims of time wastage and
alleged product theft.
Additional violations included discharge
of effluent from an improvised bathroom-kitchen setup, Absence of waste bins
and personal protective clothing, Non-compliance with a Ministry of Health
suspension order issued on 27 October 2025, Lack of changing rooms and
poor facility maintenance, Evidence of open defecation and indiscriminate waste
disposal and Inadequate ventilation throughout the factory
A second factory operated by the
same company was also shut down for similar violations, including urine
discharge into the open environment, waste accumulation, and unsafe
working conditions.
LCC Public Relations Manager
Chola Mwamba issued a stern warning to all business operators:
“Any entity found in violation of
public health laws will face the full force of the law.”
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to regular inspections and to maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant business environment for all.
