Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima has announced that government will recruit the 2,000 health workers who were supposed to be employed last year, confirming that the process will be completed before the end of 2026.

The recruitment will provide direct jobs for nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals, strengthening Zambia’s public health workforce.

For many graduates waiting for placement, this announcement represents entry into formal employment, offering stability and career progression.

Expanding the health workforce addresses staff shortages in rural and underserved areas, improving service delivery while creating jobs across districts.

The recruitment contributes to Zambia’s broader employment agenda, aligning with government’s commitment to expand public sector jobs despite fiscal constraints.

Dr. Muchima explained that the recruitment was delayed due to complex administrative processes and limited fiscal space.

Committees will soon begin district-level inductions to guide the recruitment exercise, ensuring transparency and fairness in the selection process.

“We are undergoing processes, stages by stages; very soon, the committees will be going round to all districts inducting them on how they should carry out the recruitment. I’ve been having meetings with Zambia Medical Association...”

The Minister emphasized that while government wishes to employ more health workers, budgetary limitations remain a challenge.
