President Hakainde Hichilema has declared Zambia’s erratic fuel supply situation an emergency, as government moves to cushion households and businesses from the impact of rising international crude oil prices.

Following a Cabinet meeting convened by the Head of State at State House, government approved the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) and the suspension of excise duty on petrol and diesel imports for three months, effective 1st April 2026.

Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said the measures are short-term interventions designed to stabilise the market and ensure continued access to fuel.

He explained that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has disrupted global oil supply chains, affecting the movement of goods to key markets in Asia and the United Arab Emirates, thereby exerting pressure on Zambia’s economy.

“These measures are meant to cushion households and businesses from the rising costs and ensure that economic activity continues without major disruptions,” Mweetwa stated.

The announcement comes amid growing concern from transporters, traders, and ordinary citizens over fuel shortages that have led to long queues at filling stations and delays in the movement of goods.

suspension of taxes could temporarily ease pump prices, but long-term solutions will require diversification of energy sources and strengthening of supply resilience.

Mr. Mweetwa added that without these measures, fuel pump prices for April 2026 would have been significantly higher, with negative effects on the cost of living.

He urged the public to remain calm, assuring that government will continue to monitor the situation closely and is ready to take further steps to safeguard the economy and citizens’ welfare.
