Minister of Education Douglas Syakalima has warned
that teachers found operating in “wrong” workstations will be removed from the
payroll, as Government moves to tighten discipline and improve staffing levels
in schools.
Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Syakalima said the
practice of teachers transferring themselves from rural to urban areas without
authorization is worsening the teacher-pupil ratio in schools.
“If you move from where you are stationed to another
place, then you have fired yourself because such teachers will be removed from
the payroll,” he declared.
The Minister was responding to Kamfinsa MP Christopher
Kang’ombe, who asked about measures to stop the transfer of teachers from rural
to urban areas.
He explained that newly recruited teachers are
required to serve a minimum of four years before being considered for transfer,
except under special circumstances.
Mr. Syakalima also highlighted that the Ministry has
recruited 41,917 teachers between 2022 and 2024, and an additional 2,000
teachers will be employed this year to further improve the teacher-pupil ratio.
Answering a follow-up question from Kalabo MP Chinga
Miyutu, the Minister stressed that recruitment and retention policies are
designed to strengthen staffing levels in rural schools, ensuring equitable
access to education across the country.
