Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Fred Hamaamba, has ordered the immediate dismantling of all illegal checkpoints mounted by community members along the route to Danger Hill Mines in Shiwang’andu District.

Mr. Hamaamba, who is on a fact-finding mission representing Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba, was accompanied by Muchinga Province Commanding Officer Dennis Moola and Deputy Commanding Officer of TAZARA Winfred Chimuka.

The operation followed reports that individuals had set up unauthorized checkpoints, extorting money from motorists, miners, and members of the public. Police officers swiftly dismantled the checkpoints and issued stern warnings to those involved.

“Government has banned checkpoints on main roads, leaving only critical and authorized ones. We cannot allow individuals to defy government directives and mount illegal checkpoints to extort money from innocent citizens,” Mr. Hamaamba stated.

He further warned that anyone attempting to re-establish the checkpoints would face immediate arrest.

Addressing illegal miners at Danger Hill Mines, Mr. Hamaamba urged them to vacate the premises peacefully before enforcement actions are taken.

He also banned illegal committees collecting money within the mining site, stressing that such collections were unlawful.

The Deputy Police Chief underscored that his visit was prompted by reports of unreported fatalities at the mining site.

“Police have a core mandate to protect life and property, and we will not allow illegalities to continue under our watch,” he said.

He assured the public that police will continue monitoring the area to ensure illegal checkpoints are not re-established and that law and order is maintained.
