Konkola
Copper Mines (KCM) has officially launched excavation works at its Konkola Deep
Mining Project (KDMP), marking a major milestone in Zambia’s mining sector in
chililabombwe.
The US$63
million project, executed in partnership with Australian mining contractor Mancala,
is set to create approximately 200 jobs for local Zambians.

CEO Malcolm Mewett emphasized that the project is vital to achieving the
company’s long-term goal of 300,000 tonnes of copper production annually by
2030, contributing 10 pecent to Zambia’s national output target
Spanning 26
months, the initiative will involve the construction of sumps, settlers, and
other critical underground infrastructure at the 1,350m and 1,390m levels of
one of Zambia’s deepest shafts.
Mr Mewett said
the goal is to dewater and unlock 283 million tonnes of copper ore, currently
inaccessible due to water ingress.
