Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has officially launched excavation works at its Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP), marking a major milestone in Zambia’s mining sector in chililabombwe.

The US$63 million project, executed in partnership with Australian mining contractor Mancala, is set to create approximately 200 jobs for local Zambians.

KCM Acting CEO Malcolm Mewett emphasized that the project is vital to achieving the company’s long-term goal of 300,000 tonnes of copper production annually by 2030, contributing 10 pecent to Zambia’s national output target

Spanning 26 months, the initiative will involve the construction of sumps, settlers, and other critical underground infrastructure at the 1,350m and 1,390m levels of one of Zambia’s deepest shafts.

Mr Mewett said the goal is to dewater and unlock 283 million tonnes of copper ore, currently inaccessible due to water ingress.
